PANGAEA Bathymetry Web Map and Feature Service
This new PANGAEA Bathymetry Web Map and Feature Service (first release 2021) contains bathymetry data archived at PANGAEA (including only data with a CC-BY 3.0 or CC-BY 4.0 license, based on the WMS standard, see https://www.ogc.org/standards/wms/). This service is developed as part of the German Marine Research Alliance in the core area "Data management and Digitalization" (Deutsche Allianz Meeresforschung, DAM https://www.allianz-meeresforschung.de/en/).
Note that not all bathymetry data currently archived in PANGAEA are visualized through this service. However, the number of datasets will be continuously increased in the future. As of now, only raw & processed data from multibeam echosounder measurements are incorporated in this service (further developments are in progress).
Please acknowledge that each layer of this service contains further usage requirements (e.g. citation rules) provided in the abstract (see below). Data visualized in this service shall not be used for navigational purposes.
For feedback & questions please contact PANGAEA. https://www.pangaea.de/contact/
Each incorporated PANGAEA dataset in this service contains a vast amount of dataset-specific individual metadata. If you consider incorporating this service (data layers) into any front-end application (e.g., a web-based data portal), please also make the incorporated metadata of each layer available and visible to the user.
Please note that a Geographic Information System (GIS) (e.g. QGIS https://qgis.org/ ) is required to access this service. However, data of this service can also be explored using the Viewer https://marine-data.de/?site=viewers of the Data Portal German Marine Research https://marine-data.de/. PANGAEA publishes data in a similar way as scientific journals do. And as such, published data sets are cited in a similar manner. A data citation should contain:
* the authors (creators)
* the publication year
* the dataset title
* the publisher
* a unique persistent identifier (e.g. a DOI)

The full data citation of each referenced data set should be included in the reference list of any publication citing the data. For the general structure, we follow the DataCite recommendations:

Creator (PublicationYear): Title. Publisher (PANGAEA). Identifier (DOI)

On the landing page of each data set, the suggested citation of the data set is displayed at the top, e.g. see here:

The citation can be copied or exported in the preferred format using the copy or export buttons below the title. Further buttons enable sharing the reference via social media.

If the data publication is not related to a journal article, it is possible to include the Institution as a source of the data. It will appear in the suggested citation:

Where to refer to the data?
As stated above, the full data citation should be contained in the reference list of any work citing the data.

But where in the text is the right position to refer to the data?
Obviously it depends on the context, for example on whether the data is original or reused.
Generally, the data can be cited in the methods or results section, or in the data availability section if offered by the journal.

For the latter, a suggestion to refer to the data would be:

"Data for this study were published open access (Authors, YYYY).", followed by the full citation of the dataset in the list of references.

Why is the correct citation of datasets important?
First of all, citing sources is good scientific practice. It gives credit to your work and the work of others, and increases reproducibility of findings and thus trust in your research (see also DataCite: why to cite data).

Secondly, in the increasing importance of Open data, citing data sets is an important part of the aspired rewarding system. Metrics are now starting to be provided by several platforms, such as DataCite. However, citations can only be counted if data sets are referred to in the correct manner.

Data sets "in review"
During the archiving and review process or when a moratorium is set on the data, for example due to the publication status of a connected manuscript, the data is kept in the status "in review". Datasets "in review" are usually only accessible for the contributing authors after logging in to PANGAEA. However, the metadata, including authors, title, references and parameters are already findable and visible in PANGAEA. At this stage, the data will be displayed on the website with a preliminary link instead of a registered, persistent DOI. This preliminary link can be recognized by the following format:

https://doi.pangaea.de/10.1594/PANGAEA.XXXXXX (XXXXXX = DataSetID)

It can only be resolved by the PANGAEA DOI resolver. Once the review process is finished, the DOI will be registered and take the form of

https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.XXXXXX (XXXXXX = DataSetID)

It is important to note that datasets "in review" might be modified or even deleted during the review process. Only the second form guarantees persistent access and reference to the data. Citation of any data with the status "in review" should be avoided.

Publication of data in PANGAEA
After technical review by the editor, import and approval of the author/PI, a dataset is set to status published and appears as citable on the Internet. Upon publication of a data set, the DOI registration is initiated. This process is finalized after 28 days. During this time, the data set can still be modified. However, after finalizing the DOI registration, the data set is published and cannot be changed anymore. Any changes to the dataset would be analogous to an erratum of a journal article.

Small adjustments, as the correction of small mistakes or typos, can still occur and are displayed as metadata „Change history“, both on the data set landing page (below the parameter overview) and the downloaded data set. As an example see here:
Metadata – Events table:

* Event label, unique identifier of sampling time and location
* Campaign,e.g. ship cruise ID
* Device or method used to collect a sample or (experimental) organism
* Date and time in ISO-format (e.g. 1954-04-07T13:34:11) as coordinated universal time (UTC)
* Latitude and longitude in decimal degrees (S and W are negative)
Metadata – Parameter table:

* Parameter name of the measured or determined characteristic, given in full, not as an abbreviation
* Unit, SI units are preferred
* Principal investigator, i.e. the person responsible for the collected data - can be different for each parameter
* Method or device used to collect the data

Data table:

* Event label (always in first column), date/time and latitude/longitude must correspond to the entries in the events table
* One (1) parameter per column
* The column header contains the full parameter name and the unit in squared brackets
* If data are missing, leave the cell empty (NOT „NA“ or „-“ etc.)
* Abbreviations should be avoided or need to be explained

Best practice of data citation
PANGAEA publishes data in as similar way as scientific journals do. And as such, published data sets are cited in a similar manner. A data citation should contain:
* the authors (creators)
* the publication year
* the dataset title
* the publisher
* a unique persistent identifier (e.g. a DOI)

The full data citation of each referenced data set should be included in the reference list of any publication citing the data. For the general structure, we follow the DataCite recommendations:

Creator (PublicationYear): Title. Publisher (PANGAEA). Identifier (DOI)

On the landing page of each data set, the suggested citation of the data set is displayed at the top, e.g. see here:

„Timofeeva, Anna; Smolyanitsky, Vasily; Bessonov, Vladimir; Petrovskiy, Tomash (2020): Special sea ice observations aboard Akademik Fedorov MOSAiC leg 1, 2019-09-25 to 2019-10-20. PANGAEA, https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.912021“

The citation can be copied or exported in the preferred format using the copy or export buttons below the title.
If the data publication is not related to a journal article, it is possible to include the Institution as a source of the data. It will appear in the suggested citation:

Creator (PublicationYear): Title. Institution. Publisher (PANGAEA). Identifier (DOI)

As an example, see here:

„Burkhardt, Elke (2020): Whale sightings during Polarstern cruise PS95.1 (ANT-XXXI/1.1). Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research, Bremerhaven, PANGAEA, https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.924050“

During this process, the data will be displayed on the website with a preliminary link instead of a registered, persistent DOI.

After technical review by the curator, import and approval of the author/PI, a dataset is set to status published and appears as citable on the Internet.

Where to refer to the data?
As stated above, the full data citation should be contained in the reference list of any work citing the data.

But where in the text is the right position to refer to the data?
Obviously it depends on the context, how the data is used, if it is reused data or original data.
Generally, the data can be cited in the methods or results section, or in the data availability section if offered by the journal.

For the latter, a suggestion to refer to the data would be:

"Data for this study were published open access (Authors, YYYY).", followed by the full citation of the dataset in the list of references.
Data sets "in review"
During the archiving and review process or when a moratorium is set on the data, for example due to the publication status of a connected manuscript, the data is kept in the status "in review". A dataset "in review" might be modified or even deleted during the review process. During this process, the data will be displayed on the website with a preliminary link instead if a registered, persistent DOI. This preliminary link can be recognized by the following format:

https://doi.pangaea.de/10.1594/PANGAEA.DataSetID

It can only be resolved by the PANGAEA DOI resolver. Once the DOI is registered, it will take the form of

https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.DataSetID
Only the from guarantees persistent access and reference to the data. Citation of any data with the status "in review" should be avoided.

Publication of data in PANGAEA
After technical review by the curator, import and approval of the author/PI, a dataset is set to status published and appears as citable on the Internet. Upon publication of a data set, the DOI registration is initiated.

This process is finalized after 28 days. During this time, the data set can still be modified. However, after finalizing the DOI registration, the data set is published and cannot be changed anymore. Any changes to the dataset would be analougous to an erratum of a journal article.

Small adjustments, as the correction of small mistakes or typos, can still occur and are displayed as metadata „dataset history“, both on the data set landing page and the downloaded data set. As an example see here:

The citation can be copied or exported in the preferred format using the copy or export buttons below the title.
If the data publication is not related to a journal article, it is possible to in include the Institution as a source of the data. It will appear in the suggested citation:

Best practice of data citation
PANGAEA publishes data similar to scientific journal publications. And as such, published data sets have to be cited in a similar manner. A data citation should contain:
* the authors (creators)
* the publication year
* the dataset title
* the publisher
* a unique persistent identifier (e.g. a DOI)

If the data publication is not related to a journal article, it is possible to in include the Institution as a source of the data. It will appear in the suggested citation:

As an example, see here:

To become a data publication, the status is set to published & citable which initiates an entry of the citation in the library catalog of the TIB (GetInfo). For 4 weeks, this entry can still be edited until final DOI-registration. An immediate DOI-registration can be forced by the curator on request. Similar to text publications, data publications can not be changed after final registration/publication.

Pangaea provides three versions of citable data:

1) Data supplement - data are supplementary to a scientific paper and thus are integral part of the paper and of its peer-review:
*Hollis, Chris (1993): Latest Cretaceous to Late Paleocene radiolarian biostratigraphy: A new zonation from the New Zealand region, Marine Micropaleontology, 21(4), 295-327, 10.1016/0377-8398(93)90024-R, [supplementary data: 10.1594/PANGAEA.683866].

::Always the publication must be cited when using the data. The full citation given by Pangaea contains two DOIs: one linking to the paper itself, and the second as the DOI of the data supplement. There is an ongoing discussion depending on the scientific discipline wether a data supplement should be seen as a publication by its own (librarian view) or as part of the paper (scientific view).
::An other point of discussion is the publication year of a data supplement. In new publications certainly both years, the one of the paper and the one of the data supplement, are the same. Archiving old/printed data, the year of the data supplement can have the year of the related publication or the year when the data were made available in digitized form (librarian view). Preference are given to the year of the printed version (to avoid confusion), e.g. 10.1594/PANGAEA.849173.

2) Data publication can be defined through the publishing functionality of Pangaea. Publishing data just through a data system is new and was invented during the DFG-project STD-DOI. This way is not an established process in science so far. In pure data publications, the institute must be given as the source:
*Bauer, Wilfried; Spaeth, G; Jacobs, Joachim; Weber, Klaus; Siegesmund, S; Thomas, RJ (2004): Geological map of BJORNNUTANE, Heimefrontfjella, Antarctica (Scale 1:25 000). Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research, Bremerhaven; Institut for Geologie und Dynamik der Lithosphäre, Göttingen; Bundesamt für Kartographie und Geodäsie, Frankfurt, 10.1594/PANGAEA.138777

3) For peer-reviewed data publications various Data Journals for different scientific fields are available. Examples:
* Earth System Science Data by Copernicus,
* Scientific Data by Nature,
* Geoscience Data Journal by Wiley.

Suggestion for a note in a journal article or report referring to its data supplement:
*Supplementary data are available at https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.xxxxxx (where xxxxxx is the PANGAEA dataset ID)

Suggestion for a note in a book or special volume of a journal containing various publications referring to the general use of Pangaea:
*Data related to the publications of this volume are available in Open Access through PANGAEA - Data Publisher for Earth & Environmental Science, 10.1594/PANGAEA. Individual data sets are referenced by its DOI for direct access and citation.

Work in Progress
Best practice of data citation
PANGAEA publishes data similar to scientific journal publications. And as such, published data sets have to be cited in a similar matter. A data citation should contain:
* the authors (creators)
* the publication year
* the dataset title
* the publisher
* a unique persistent identifier (e.g. a DOI)

The full data citation of each referenced data set should be included in the reference list of any publication citing the data. For the general structure, we follow the DataCite recommendations:

Creator (PublicationYear): Title. Publisher (PANGAEA). Identifier (DOI)

On the landing page of each data set, the suggested citation of the data set is displayed at the top, e.g. https://doi.pangaea.de/10.1594/PANGAEA.912021:

„Timofeeva, Anna; Smolyanitsky, Vasily; Bessonov, Vladimir; Petrovskiy, Tomash (2020): Special sea ice observations aboard Akademik Fedorov MOSAiC leg 1, 2019-09-25 to 2019-10-20. PANGAEA, https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.912021“

if the data publication is not related to a journal article, it is possible to in include the Institution as a source of the data. It will appear in the suggested citation:

Creator (PublicationYear): Title. Institution. Publisher (PANGAEA). Identifier (DOI)

As an example, see https://doi.pangaea.de/10.1594/PANGAEA.924050:

„Burkhardt, Elke (2020): Whale sightings during Polarstern cruise PS95.1 (ANT-XXXI/1.1). Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research, Bremerhaven, PANGAEA, https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.924050“

As an example see https://doi.pangaea.de/10.1594/PANGAEA.882624.
