== Bio (first posted on [http://markmail.org/message/klznohkgwxtkq5j3 Lucene Mailing list)] ==

I am 36 years old, born in southern Germany (Bamberg). I studied physics at
University Erlangen-Nürnberg and graduated in 2004. Since 1996 I was working
in parallel for PANGAEA (Publishing Network for Geological and Environmental
Data, http://www.pangaea.de/, it is a library for data
publications) as software designer. In 1996 I was one of the early persons
started to program Java applets with JDK 1.0.2 (one of them is still
available on the PANGAEA homepage, [[ART]]) and since then I used Java as my primary
programming language.

Since end of 2004, I am working full-time for PANGAEA, employed at the
Center for Marine Environmental Sciences belonging to the University of
Bremen, where I live now (and trying to get a PhD in parallel). My
primary business is now design and development of the fundamental middleware
components for PANGAEA. In 2004 we started to use full-text search engines
for metadata search. We noticed early, that geographical information systems
can take advantage of full text engines, but that search using geographical
constraints is also important. Our first FTS was embedded into our backend
database (at this time PostgreSQL), so it was possible to do joins between the FTS and
relational tables. Looking for a better solution, I came to Lucene. In
2005-2006 I started a new Open Source Project called [[panFMP]] (PANGAEA
Framework for Metadata Portals, http://www.panfmp.org/),
that uses Lucene for full text indexing and enriched Lucene with the
TrieRangeQuery. panFMP is a little bit like Solr, but at the time when the
project started, Solr was not well-known to the community. [[PanFMP]] uses a
little bit different metadata approach and uses the harvesting approach
(OAI-PMH), but is comparable.

Since 2003 I am also working in the PHP (http://www.php.net/) development crew, maintaining the
web server plug-in for Sun Java System Web Servers (my favourite web
server). I also have a small one-man software-company called "Schindlers
Software" (http://www.schindlers-software.de). My (IT) interests are Lucene, XML techniques, Data
Warehousing, Sensor Networks, metadata dissemination using global standards,
global unique identifiers like DOIs,...
Hannes Grobe is a marine geologist and the chief-editor for data publications in PANGAEA. After his diploma in geology/paleontology at the Christian-Albrechts-University, Kiel in 1982, he joined the maiden voyage of the research vessel Polarstern to the Antarctic. The sampling material was used for a Ph.D. thesis about paleoclimate reconstructions (http://hdl.handle.net/10013/epic.11657). The thesis was followed by a three year period as a post-doc research scientist at the Alfred-Wegener-Institut (AWI). From 1989 to 1991 he was head of the public relation office of AWI. Since than he participated as a senior scientist in 15 expeditions to both polar hemispheres. Within the AWI geosciences infrastructure he is responsible for the POLARSTERN core repository and related laboratory facilities.

In 1986, Grobe realized the lack of a common database for geoscientific investigations. It was the start for the development and finaly the implementation of a repository for the various data from earth system research. The system PANGAEA is available to the international scientific community since the opening of the Internet. It was the first system allowing full referencing of data sets including a [[DOI]] (Digital Object Identifier). In 1995 Grobe founded the ''World Data Center for Marine Environmental Sciences (WDC-MARE)'' as part of the ICSU system and established the CD/journal ''WDC-MARE Reports''. Since 2010 he is editor-in-chief of the Pangaea Data Publisher.

== Abstract ==

The uptake of anthropogenic CO2 by the oceans leads to a rise in the oceanic partial pressure of CO2 (''p''CO2), a decrease in ocean pH (the so-called ocean acidification), and a decrease in ocean carbonate ion concentration. Numerous papers report the effects of ocean acidification on marine organisms and communities, but in inconsistent units or scales. Sometimes, data not relevant for the paper but possibly relevant for comparative studies are not included in the publications. Hence direct comparison of results of different studies has often been difficult.

In response to this problem, a data compilation on the biological response to ocean acidification was launched in 2008 by the EU projects [http://www.eur-oceans.eu EUR-OCEANS] and [http://www.epoca-project.eu EPOCA]. This effort ended in 2012 with the end of EPOCA but is now resuming in the framework of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) project '''Ocean Acidification International Coordination Centre''' ([http://www.iaea.org/ocean-acidification OA-ICC]).

== What kind of data is included in the data compilation of the Ocean Acidification International Coordination Centre ([http://www.iaea.org/ocean-acidification OA-ICC])? ==

The OA-ICC data compilation includes data from published papers studying the '''biological response to ocean acidification'''. In order to be included in the compilation, the papers must contain information on at least two variables of the carbonate system as well as salinity and temperature. The carbonate chemistry for all data sets has been recalculated using the [http://CRAN.R-project.org/package=seacarb R package seacarb]. All the datasets of the OA-ICC and the EPOCA/EUROCEANS compilation (2008- 2012) have been given the tag “Ocean Acidification International Coordinate Centre ([http://www.iaea.org/ocean-acidification OA-ICC])” in the data library [http://www.pangaea.de PANGAEA®] - Data Publisher for Earth & Environmental Science operated by [http://www.awi.de Alfred Wegener Institute] in Bremerhaven, Germany (shown under the '''[http://www.pangaea.de/projects/ Project table]''').

== How to search the data compilation ==

Go to '''[http://oa-icc.ipsl.fr/ Data portal]''' of the [http://www.iaea.org/ocean-acidification OA-ICC] webpage or to [http://www.pangaea.de PANGAEA®] - Data Publisher for Earth & Environmental Science

[[Image:Example.jpg|thumb|Figure 1- Screenshot of simple search on the Pangaea webpage]]

'''Simple search'''

Enter the title of papers, authors or the project name “OA-ICC” in the search field and click on the Search button to get a list of datasets (fig. 1). The simple search is operating like Google. Then filter these datasets by clicking “OA-ICC” under '''Project''' in the facetted search which are shown on the left column of the webpage. You can further filter these datasets by Dataset Author, Dataset Publication Year and Location using the facetted search or by Temporal coverage and Geographic coverage using the map on the right column of the webpage (fig. 2).

Examples:
Search: calcification and filter by Project: OA-ICC
This will give you datasets including the word calcification anywhere (title, abstract, parameter name)

{{Box
| title = 📌 How to cite a PANGAEA dataset in a nutshell
| content =

Go to the dataset landing page

Copy the suggested citation at the top

Paste it into your reference list

Cite it in the text as (Author, Year)

✔ Always include the dataset in the reference list
✔ Always use the official DOI (https://doi.org/…)
❌ Do not cite the non-persistent link (https://doi.pangaea.de/...)

}}

Citing datasets is fundamental to good scientific practice ([https://doi.org/10.1038/s41597-023-02491-7 Stall et al. 2023]). It gives proper credit to your own work as well as to the work of others, while also increasing the reproducibility of results and, in turn, trust in research (see also [https://datacite.org/cite-your-data.html DataCite: Why cite data?]). Proper citation also ensures that laboratory and support staff receive due recognition for their contributions to the measurements, even if they were not directly involved in the manuscripts derived from the data.

With the growing importance of open data, dataset citation has also become a central element of the scientific reward system. Citation metrics, increasingly provided by platforms such as DataCite, only function when datasets are cited correctly. By listing datasets in the reference section, you help ensure they are indexed, discoverable, and counted toward scholarly metrics.

==Best practice for citing data==

PANGAEA publishes datasets in much the same way that scientific journals publish articles. For this reason, PANGAEA datasets should be cited formally and consistently, just like other publications. Citations should '''always appear in the reference list''' of any publication that uses the data.

PANGAEA’s citation practices follow international recommendations and guidelines ([https://doi.org/10.1038/s41597-023-02491-7 Stall et al., 2023]), reflecting the growing recognition of data as a fundamental resource for scientific research.

On the landing page of each dataset, the suggested citation is displayed at the top. The citation can be copied or exported in the preferred format using the copy or export buttons below the title. Further buttons enable sharing the reference via social media.

[[File:Citation_tools.png|frameless|upright=1.1]]

Citation tools (copy and export citation) located below the dataset reference.

Please note that '''citation of datasets ''"in review"'' should be avoided''' (''see further information
[[Citation#Citation of datasets "in review" should be avoided|''below'']]).''

In addition to citing individual datasets, it is strongly recommended to acknowledge PANGAEA as the data publisher, for instance in the method or data availability section. The following publication, authored by the PANGAEA team, describes the repository, data archiving workflow, and its infrastructure:
'''Felden, Janine; Möller, Lars; Schindler, Uwe; Huber, Robert; Schumacher, Stefanie; Koppe, Roland; Diepenbroek, Michael; Glöckner, Frank Oliver (2023):''' PANGAEA - Data Publisher for Earth & Environmental Science. ''Sci Data'' '''10''', 347 (2023). https://doi.org/10.1038/s41597-023-02269-x
Citing PANGAEA is optional but highly appreciated, as it supports the maintenance and development of the service.

== Where and how to cite datasets ==

Every dataset citation has 2 parts:

* Full citation → reference list
* Short citation → in-text

=== 1. Full citations in the reference list ===
The reference list of a publication should include '''full citations for all datasets used'''. This enables automated attribution and credit through Crossref’s [https://www.crossref.org/services/event-data/ Event Data].

==== a) Standalone datasets ====
[[PANGAEA publication types|Standalone datasets]] are self-contained data publications that are not part of a larger collection.

'''Example citations:'''
'''Timofeeva, Anna; Smolyanitsky, Vasily M; Bessonov, Vladimir; Petrovskiy, Tomash (2020):''' Special sea ice observations aboard Akademik Fedorov MOSAiC leg 1, 2019-09-25 to 2019-10-20 [dataset]. ''PANGAEA'', https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.912021

'''Bauch, Dorothea; Meyer, Hanno; Damm, Ellen; D'Angelo, Alessandra; Mellat, Moein; Granskog, Mats A; Weiner, Mikaela; Marent, Andreas (2024):''' Stable water isotopes of sea ice at biogeochemistry sites (BGC) and Main Coring Sites (MCS) during MOSAiC expedition, leg 1 [dataset]. ''PANGAEA'', https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.971330.

==== b) Bundled publications and publication series (Dependent Collections) ====
Some datasets are part of [[PANGAEA publication types|Dependent Collections]], which distinguish between the overall dataset Collection and Member datasets:

* A Collection provides the overarching framework and context but contains no data.
* Member datasets are the individual, data-bearing datasets within a Collection.

For Dependent Collections, either the Collection is cited - which is usually sufficient - or individual member datasets are cited when there is a need to refer explicitly to a specific subset. In the latter case, member datasets are always cited in the context of the Collection they belong to, similar to citing a chapter within a book.
==== c) Editorial Publications and Bibliographies (Independent Collections) ====
[[PANGAEA publication types|Independent Collections]] group datasets that can be used and cited independently. Individual datasets may belong to multiple collections.

=== 2. In-text citations (Author-year format) ===

==== a) Main part of a publication (e.g., methods or results sections) ====
In the body of a publication, datasets should be cited in the '''author-year format (Authors, YYYY)''', just like journal articles and other publications, and '''must be accompanied by a full entry in the reference list'''.

'''Example:'''
This study makes use of observational data from MOSAiC leg 1 (Timofeeva et al., 2020, Bauch et al., 2024), both datasets being published via the data publisher PANGAEA - Data Publisher for Earth & Environmental Science (see Felden et al., 2023 for a description of the repository)

==== b) Data availability statements ====
A data availability statement is written for the reader and clearly states where the supporting datasets and any relevant software are located, as well as details about accessibility. In accordance with the recommendations in Stall et al. ([https://doi.org/10.1038/s41597-023-02491-7 2023]) and the [https://data.agu.org/resources/availability-citation-checklist-for-authors AGU Availability and Citation Checklist for Authors], the statement should include an '''in-text citation in author-year format''' (authors, YYYY), '''along with a full reference list entry''' and key information about the datasets. Authors should provide a brief description of the data, the repository name, persistent identifiers (DOIs), and licensing or access conditions.

'''Example:'''
The data supporting this study include observational sea ice records (Timofeeva et al., 2020; https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.912021) and geochemical porewater analyses (Bauch et al., 2024; https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.956325). Both datasets are openly available through PANGAEA – Data Publisher for Earth & Environmental Science (Felden et al., 2023; https://doi.org/10.1038/s41597-023-02269-x). Data are licensed under CC-BY and accessible without restrictions.

== Structure of a dataset citations ==

=== Required elements ===
A complete dataset citation should contain the following elements:
* Authors (creators)
* Year of publication
* Title of dataset
* [[PANGAEA publication types|Type]] of dataset publication (e.g., ''"Dataset", "Publication series", "Bundled publication", "Editorial publication" or "Dataset bibliography"'')
* Publisher (e.g., PANGAEA)
* Persistent identifier (DOI)

=== General Citation Format ===
'''Creator (PublicationYear):''' Title [type]. ''Publisher,'' Identifier

'''Example:'''
'''Timofeeva, Anna; Smolyanitsky, Vasily; Bessonov, Vladimir; Petrovskiy, Tomash (2020):''' Special sea ice observations aboard Akademik Fedorov MOSAiC leg 1, 2019-09-25 to 2019-10-20 [dataset]. ''PANGAEA'', https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.912021

== Citation of datasets ''"in review"'' should be avoided ==
Data that are still under review are not yet considered published entities and therefore should not be cited. Such datasets are not persistent because they may change or become unavailable. In practice, this means that:

* they are usually accessible only to contributing authors after logging in to PANGAEA, and

* they may be modified or even deleted during the review process.

Metadata of datasets under review is already displayed and findable on the PANGAEA website, but they contain a '''preliminary link''' ("...doi.pangaea.de") that can only be resolved with the PANGAEA DOI resolver and be easily confused with the final and persistent DOI (...doi.org..) . '''Please avoid using the preliminary link for citation.'''

The '''preliminary link can be recognized''' by the following format:
<nowiki>https://doi</nowiki>.'''pangaea.de'''/10.1594/PANGAEA.XXXXXX (''XXXXXX = DataSetID'')
It can only be resolved by the PANGAEA DOI resolver. Once the review process is finished, the link will take the final form, corresponding to the '''citable DOI''':
<nowiki>https://doi</nowiki>.'''org'''/10.1594/PANGAEA.XXXXXX (''XXXXXX = DataSetID'')

{{Box
| title = 📌 How to cite a PANGAEA dataset in a nutshell
| content =

Go to the dataset landing page

Copy the suggested citation at the top

Paste it into your reference list

Cite it in the text as (Author, Year)

✔ Always include the dataset in the reference list
✔ Always use the DOI (https://doi.org/…)

}}

==Best practice for citing data==

PANGAEA publishes datasets in much the same way that scientific journals publish articles. For this reason, PANGAEA datasets should be cited formally and consistently, just like other publications. Citations should '''always appear in the reference list''' of any publication that uses the data.

[[File:Citation_tools.png|frameless|upright=1.1]]

Citation tools (copy and export citation) located below the dataset reference.

Please note that '''citation of datasets ''"in review"'' should be avoided''' (''see further information below).''

* Short citation → in-text

=== 1. Full citations in the reference list ===
The reference list of a publication should include '''full citations for all datasets used'''. This enables automated attribution and credit through Crossref’s [https://www.crossref.org/services/event-data/ Event Data].

==== a) Standalone datasets ====
[[PANGAEA publication types|Standalone datasets]] are self-contained data publications that are not part of a larger collection.

'''Example citations:'''
'''Timofeeva, Anna; Smolyanitsky, Vasily M; Bessonov, Vladimir; Petrovskiy, Tomash (2020):''' Special sea ice observations aboard Akademik Fedorov MOSAiC leg 1, 2019-09-25 to 2019-10-20 [dataset]. ''PANGAEA'', https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.912021

'''Bauch, Dorothea; Meyer, Hanno; Damm, Ellen; D'Angelo, Alessandra; Mellat, Moein; Granskog, Mats A; Weiner, Mikaela; Marent, Andreas (2024):''' Stable water isotopes of sea ice at biogeochemistry sites (BGC) and Main Coring Sites (MCS) during MOSAiC expedition, leg 1 [dataset]. ''PANGAEA'', https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.971330.

==== b) Bundled publications and publication series (Dependent Collections) ====
Some datasets are part of [[PANGAEA publication types|Dependent Collections]], which distinguish between Parents and Child datasets:

* A Parent provides the overarching collection and context but contains no data.
* Child datasets are the individual, data-bearing datasets within a Parent.

In the case of Dependent collections, citing the Parent is sufficient. Individual child datasets should only be cited when there is a need to refer explicitly to a specific subset. Childs are always cited in relation to the Parent, similar to citing a chapter within a book.

'''Example citations:'''

==== c) Editorial Publications and Bibliographies (Independent Collections) ====
[[PANGAEA publication types|Independent Collections]] group datasets that can be used and cited independently. Individual datasets may belong to multiple collections.

'''Example citations:'''
'''Eisen, Olaf; Steinhage, Daniel; Franke, Steven; Helm, Veit; Binder, Tobias; Drews, Reinhard; Eagles, Graeme; Humbert, Angelika; Jansen, Daniela; Jokat, Wilfried; Lambrecht, Astrid; Mieth, Matthias; Riedel, Sven; Miller, Heinrich (2024):''' Collection of datasets from AWI's radio-echo sounding systems on ice sheets and glaciers [dataset bibliography]. ''PANGAEA'', https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.972094

== Citation of datasets ''"in review"'' should be avoided ==
Data that are still in the archiving and review process are not yet considered published entities and therefore should not be cited.

❌ Do NOT cite datasets "in review"

}}

==Best practice for citing data==

Please note that '''citation of datasets ''"in review"'' should be avoided''' (''see further information below).''

* Short citation → in-text

=== 1. Full citations in the reference list ===
The reference list of a publication should include '''full citations for all datasets used'''. This enables automated attribution and credit through Crossref’s [https://www.crossref.org/services/event-data/ Event Data].

==== a) Standalone datasets ====

'''Parent:'''
'''Zabel, Matthias (2022):''' Pore water and solid phase data from deep-sea trench sediments [dataset bundled publication]. ''PANGAEA'', https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.947269

'''Child:'''
'''Zabel, Matthias (2022):''' Pore water analyses of sediment core GeoB16426-1 [dataset]. ''PANGAEA'', <nowiki>https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.947262</nowiki>, ''In:'' '''Zabel, M (2022):''' Pore water and solid phase data from deep-sea trench sediments [dataset bundled publication]. PANGAEA, https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.947269

==== c) Editorial Publications and Bibliographies (Independent Collections) ====
[[PANGAEA publication types|Independent Collections]] group datasets that can be used and cited independently. Individual datasets may belong to multiple collections.

'''Example citations:'''

'''Collection:'''
'''Eisen, Olaf; Steinhage, Daniel; Franke, Steven; Helm, Veit; Binder, Tobias; Drews, Reinhard; Eagles, Graeme; Humbert, Angelika; Jansen, Daniela; Jokat, Wilfried; Lambrecht, Astrid; Mieth, Matthias; Riedel, Sven; Miller, Heinrich (2024):''' Collection of datasets from AWI's radio-echo sounding systems on ice sheets and glaciers [dataset bibliography]. ''PANGAEA'', https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.972094
'''Independent dataset:'''
'''Eagles, Graeme; Ruppel, Antonia; Läufer, Andreas; Steinhage, Daniel; Helm, Veit (2025):''' ANT 2015/16: AWI airborne Radio-Echo Sounding data western DML over the Maud Belt and Ekström Ice Shelf (GEA-V-FMA project) [dataset]. ''PANGAEA'', https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.987347

=== 2. In-text citations (Author-year format) ===

==== b) Data availability statements ====

== Structure of a dataset citations ==

=== Required elements ===
A complete dataset citation should contain the following elements:
* Authors (creators)
* Year of publication
* Title of dataset
* [[PANGAEA publication types|Type]] of dataset publication (e.g., ''"Dataset", "Publication series", "Bundled publication", "Editorial publication" or "Dataset bibliography"'')
* Publisher (e.g., PANGAEA)
* Persistent identifier (DOI)

=== General Citation Format ===
'''Creator (PublicationYear):''' Title [type]. ''Publisher,'' Identifier

'''Example:'''
'''Timofeeva, Anna; Smolyanitsky, Vasily; Bessonov, Vladimir; Petrovskiy, Tomash (2020):''' Special sea ice observations aboard Akademik Fedorov MOSAiC leg 1, 2019-09-25 to 2019-10-20 [dataset]. ''PANGAEA'', https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.912021

=== Institutional Authorship ===
In some cases, data are submitted on behalf of an institution rather than individual researchers. Here, the institution is listed as the creator and is responsible for the acquisition of data and related science:

'''Creator (PublicationYear):''' Title [type]. ''Institution,'' ''Publisher'', Identifier

'''Example:'''
'''Nicolaus, Marcel; Hoppmann, Mario; Tao, Ran; Katlein, Christian (2023):''' Spectral radiation fluxes, albedo and transmittance from autonomous measurements from Radiation Station 2020R21, deployed during MOSAiC 2019/20 [dataset bundled publication]. ''Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research, Bremerhaven, PANGAEA,'' https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.948838

== Citation of datasets ''"in review"'' should be avoided ==
Data that are still in the archiving and review process, or that are under a moratorium, are not yet considered published entities and therefore must not be cited.

❌ Do NOT cite datasets "in review"

}}

==Best practice for citing data==
[[File:Citation_tools.png|400px|thumbnail|right|Citation tools (copy and export citation) located below the dataset reference.]]

Please note that '''citation of datasets ''"in review"'' should be avoided''' (''see further information below).''

* Short citation → in-text

=== 1. Full citations in the reference list ===
The reference list of a publication should include '''full citations for all datasets used'''. This enables automated attribution and credit through Crossref’s [https://www.crossref.org/services/event-data/ Event Data].

==== a) Standalone datasets ====

'''Parent:'''
'''Zabel, Matthias (2022):''' Pore water and solid phase data from deep-sea trench sediments [dataset bundled publication]. ''PANGAEA'', https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.947269

'''Child:'''
'''Zabel, Matthias (2022):''' Pore water analyses of sediment core GeoB16426-1 [dataset]. ''PANGAEA'', <nowiki>https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.947262</nowiki>, ''In:'' '''Zabel, M (2022):''' Pore water and solid phase data from deep-sea trench sediments [dataset bundled publication]. PANGAEA, https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.947269

==== c) Editorial Publications and Bibliographies (Independent Collections) ====
[[PANGAEA publication types|Independent Collections]] group datasets that can be used and cited independently. Individual datasets may belong to multiple collections.

'''Example citations:'''

'''Collection:'''
'''Eisen, Olaf; Steinhage, Daniel; Franke, Steven; Helm, Veit; Binder, Tobias; Drews, Reinhard; Eagles, Graeme; Humbert, Angelika; Jansen, Daniela; Jokat, Wilfried; Lambrecht, Astrid; Mieth, Matthias; Riedel, Sven; Miller, Heinrich (2024):''' Collection of datasets from AWI's radio-echo sounding systems on ice sheets and glaciers [dataset bibliography]. ''PANGAEA'', https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.972094
'''Independent dataset:'''
'''Eagles, Graeme; Ruppel, Antonia; Läufer, Andreas; Steinhage, Daniel; Helm, Veit (2025):''' ANT 2015/16: AWI airborne Radio-Echo Sounding data western DML over the Maud Belt and Ekström Ice Shelf (GEA-V-FMA project) [dataset]. ''PANGAEA'', https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.987347

=== 2. In-text citations (Author-year format) ===

==== b) Data availability statements ====

== Structure of a dataset citations ==

=== Required elements ===
A complete dataset citation should contain the following elements:
* Authors (creators)
* Year of publication
* Title of dataset
* [[PANGAEA publication types|Type]] of dataset publication (e.g., ''"Dataset", "Publication series", "Bundled publication", "Editorial publication" or "Dataset bibliography"'')
* Publisher (e.g., PANGAEA)
* Persistent identifier (DOI)

=== General Citation Format ===
'''Creator (PublicationYear):''' Title [type]. ''Publisher,'' Identifier

'''Example:'''
'''Timofeeva, Anna; Smolyanitsky, Vasily; Bessonov, Vladimir; Petrovskiy, Tomash (2020):''' Special sea ice observations aboard Akademik Fedorov MOSAiC leg 1, 2019-09-25 to 2019-10-20 [dataset]. ''PANGAEA'', https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.912021

=== Institutional Authorship ===

==Best practice for citing data==
[[File:Citation_tools.png|400px|thumbnail|right|Citation tools (copy and export citation) located below the dataset reference.]]

Please note that '''citation of datasets ''"in review"'' should be avoided''' (''see further information below).''

* Short citation → in-text

=== 1. Full citations in the reference list ===
The reference list of a publication should include '''full citations for all datasets used'''. This enables automated attribution and credit through Crossref’s [https://www.crossref.org/services/event-data/ Event Data].

==== a) Standalone datasets ====
[[PANGAEA publication types|Standalone datasets]] are self-contained data publications that are not part of a larger collection.

'''Example citations:'''
'''Timofeeva, Anna; Smolyanitsky, Vasily M; Bessonov, Vladimir; Petrovskiy, Tomash (2020):''' Special sea ice observations aboard Akademik Fedorov MOSAiC leg 1, 2019-09-25 to 2019-10-20 [dataset]. ''PANGAEA'', https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.912021

'''Bauch, Dorothea; Meyer, Hanno; Damm, Ellen; D'Angelo, Alessandra; Mellat, Moein; Granskog, Mats A; Weiner, Mikaela; Marent, Andreas (2024):''' Stable water isotopes of sea ice at biogeochemistry sites (BGC) and Main Coring Sites (MCS) during MOSAiC expedition, leg 1 [dataset]. ''PANGAEA'', https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.971330.

==== b) Bundled publications and publication series (Dependent Collections) ====
Some datasets are part of [[PANGAEA publication types|Dependent Collections]], which distinguish between Parents and Child datasets:

* A Parent provides the overarching collection and context but contains no data.
* Child datasets are the individual, data-bearing datasets within a Parent.

Each '''Child dataset should be cited individually to improve visibility''' and ensure correct attribution, even when a Parent citation is provided. Child datasets are always cited with reference to the Parent, similar to citing a book chapter within a book. Citing the Parent alone is therefore redundant.

'''Example citations:'''

'''Child:'''
'''Zabel, Matthias (2022):''' Pore water analyses of sediment core GeoB16426-1 [dataset]. ''PANGAEA'', <nowiki>https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.947262</nowiki>, ''In:'' '''Zabel, M (2022):''' Pore water and solid phase data from deep-sea trench sediments [dataset bundled publication]. PANGAEA, https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.947269
'''Parent:'''
'''Zabel, Matthias (2022):''' Pore water and solid phase data from deep-sea trench sediments [dataset bundled publication]. ''PANGAEA'', https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.947269

==== c) Editorial Publications and Bibliographies (Independent Collections) ====
[[PANGAEA publication types|Independent Collections]] group datasets that can be used and cited independently. Individual datasets may belong to multiple collections.

'''Example citations:'''

'''Collection:'''
'''Eisen, Olaf; Steinhage, Daniel; Franke, Steven; Helm, Veit; Binder, Tobias; Drews, Reinhard; Eagles, Graeme; Humbert, Angelika; Jansen, Daniela; Jokat, Wilfried; Lambrecht, Astrid; Mieth, Matthias; Riedel, Sven; Miller, Heinrich (2024):''' Collection of datasets from AWI's radio-echo sounding systems on ice sheets and glaciers [dataset bibliography]. ''PANGAEA'', https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.972094
'''Independent dataset:'''
'''Eagles, Graeme; Ruppel, Antonia; Läufer, Andreas; Steinhage, Daniel; Helm, Veit (2025):''' ANT 2015/16: AWI airborne Radio-Echo Sounding data western DML over the Maud Belt and Ekström Ice Shelf (GEA-V-FMA project) [dataset]. ''PANGAEA'', https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.987347

=== 2. In-text citations (Author-year format) ===

==== b) Data availability statements ====

== Structure of a dataset citations ==

=== Required elements ===
A complete dataset citation should contain the following elements:
* Authors (creators)
* Year of publication
* Title of dataset
* [[PANGAEA publication types|Type]] of dataset publication (e.g., ''"Dataset", "Publication series", "Bundled publication", "Editorial publication" or "Dataset bibliography"'')
* Publisher (e.g., PANGAEA)
* Persistent identifier (DOI)

=== General Citation Format ===
'''Creator (PublicationYear):''' Title [type]. ''Publisher,'' Identifier

'''Example:'''
'''Timofeeva, Anna; Smolyanitsky, Vasily; Bessonov, Vladimir; Petrovskiy, Tomash (2020):''' Special sea ice observations aboard Akademik Fedorov MOSAiC leg 1, 2019-09-25 to 2019-10-20 [dataset]. ''PANGAEA'', https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.912021

=== Institutional Authorship ===

==Why is the correct citation of datasets important?==

==Best practice for citing data==
[[File:Citation_tools.png|400px|thumbnail|right|Citation tools (copy and export citation) located below the dataset reference.]]

Please note that '''citation of datasets ''"in review"'' should be avoided''' (''see further information below).''

=== 1. Full citations in the reference list ===
The reference list of a publication should include '''full citations for all datasets used'''. This enables automated attribution and credit through Crossref’s [https://www.crossref.org/services/event-data/ Event Data].

==== a) Standalone datasets ====
[[PANGAEA publication types|Standalone datasets]] are self-contained data publications that are not part of a larger collection.

'''Example citations:'''
'''Timofeeva, Anna; Smolyanitsky, Vasily M; Bessonov, Vladimir; Petrovskiy, Tomash (2020):''' Special sea ice observations aboard Akademik Fedorov MOSAiC leg 1, 2019-09-25 to 2019-10-20 [dataset]. ''PANGAEA'', https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.912021

'''Bauch, Dorothea; Meyer, Hanno; Damm, Ellen; D'Angelo, Alessandra; Mellat, Moein; Granskog, Mats A; Weiner, Mikaela; Marent, Andreas (2024):''' Stable water isotopes of sea ice at biogeochemistry sites (BGC) and Main Coring Sites (MCS) during MOSAiC expedition, leg 1 [dataset]. ''PANGAEA'', https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.971330.

==== b) Bundled publications and publication series (Dependent Collections) ====
Some datasets are part of [[PANGAEA publication types|Dependent Collections]], which distinguish between Parents and Child datasets:

* A Parent provides the overarching collection and context but contains no data.
* Child datasets are the individual, data-bearing datasets within a Parent.

Each '''Child dataset should be cited individually to improve visibility''' and ensure correct attribution, even when a Parent citation is provided. Child datasets are always cited with reference to the Parent, similar to citing a book chapter within a book. Citing the Parent alone is therefore redundant.

'''Example citations:'''

'''Child:'''
'''Zabel, Matthias (2022):''' Pore water analyses of sediment core GeoB16426-1 [dataset]. ''PANGAEA'', <nowiki>https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.947262</nowiki>, ''In:'' '''Zabel, M (2022):''' Pore water and solid phase data from deep-sea trench sediments [dataset bundled publication]. PANGAEA, https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.947269
'''Parent:'''
'''Zabel, Matthias (2022):''' Pore water and solid phase data from deep-sea trench sediments [dataset bundled publication]. ''PANGAEA'', https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.947269

==== c) Editorial Publications and Bibliographies (Independent Collections) ====
[[PANGAEA publication types|Independent Collections]] group datasets that can be used and cited independently. Individual datasets may belong to multiple collections.

'''Example citations:'''

'''Collection:'''
'''Eisen, Olaf; Steinhage, Daniel; Franke, Steven; Helm, Veit; Binder, Tobias; Drews, Reinhard; Eagles, Graeme; Humbert, Angelika; Jansen, Daniela; Jokat, Wilfried; Lambrecht, Astrid; Mieth, Matthias; Riedel, Sven; Miller, Heinrich (2024):''' Collection of datasets from AWI's radio-echo sounding systems on ice sheets and glaciers [dataset bibliography]. ''PANGAEA'', https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.972094
'''Independent dataset:'''
'''Eagles, Graeme; Ruppel, Antonia; Läufer, Andreas; Steinhage, Daniel; Helm, Veit (2025):''' ANT 2015/16: AWI airborne Radio-Echo Sounding data western DML over the Maud Belt and Ekström Ice Shelf (GEA-V-FMA project) [dataset]. ''PANGAEA'', https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.987347

=== 2. In-text citations (Author-year format) ===

==== b) Data availability statements ====

== Structure of a dataset citations ==

=== Required elements ===
A complete dataset citation should contain the following elements:
* Authors (creators)
* Year of publication
* Title of dataset
* [[PANGAEA publication types|Type]] of dataset publication (e.g., ''"Dataset", "Publication series", "Bundled publication", "Editorial publication" or "Dataset bibliography"'')
* Publisher (e.g., PANGAEA)
* Persistent identifier (DOI)

=== General Citation Format ===
'''Creator (PublicationYear):''' Title [type]. ''Publisher,'' Identifier

'''Example:'''
'''Timofeeva, Anna; Smolyanitsky, Vasily; Bessonov, Vladimir; Petrovskiy, Tomash (2020):''' Special sea ice observations aboard Akademik Fedorov MOSAiC leg 1, 2019-09-25 to 2019-10-20 [dataset]. ''PANGAEA'', https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.912021

=== Institutional Authorship ===

The Baseline Surface Radiation Project ([[BSRN]]) makes use of the so called ''station-to-archive'' format to share the data of one station for one month with the BSRN community. This format cannot be understood without reading the [http://bsrn.awi.de/fileadmin/user_upload/bsrn.awi.de/Publications/Hegner.pdf BSRN format manual] (or see [https://bsrn.awi.de/fileadmin/user_upload/bsrn.awi.de/Publications/gcos-174.pdf here] for a more recent summary). So the BSRN Toolbox was developed to convert this format to more readable dataset tables and for creating PANGAEA import files. These tables can be opened with a spreadsheet program like Microsoft Excel or OpenOffice and with [[PanPlot]] to visualize the data very easily. With a download manager users can download station-to-archive files from the [ftp://ftp.bsrn.awi.de BSRN ftp-server] to the local computer system.

'''Download the up-to-date windows version''' [https://bsrn.awi.de/fileadmin/user_upload/bsrn.awi.de/Programms/BSRN_Toolbox_Win.exe here].
== Reference and detailed description ==
[[Image:Download_manager.png|thumb|Fig. 1: Download Manager]]

Downloading station-to-archive files

'''Before a download of BSRN station-to-archive files can be started the account must be set'''. Ask [mailto:Amelie.Driemel@awi.de Amelie Driemel] for the BSRN ftp-account.

After starting the BSRN Toolbox choose '''Station-to-archive->Download Station-to-archive files...'''. The download manager will be opened (Fig. 1). Here, on the second tab ('Account'), the server address (ftp.bsrn.awi.de) and the received account have to be inserted. In the tab 'Options' the user can then select the station(s), the month(s), and the year(s). The files from this selection will be downloaded to the directory selected under '''Download directory'''. With the options '''Decompress''' and '''Check after download''' the user can specify that the files will be decompressed with gunzip and checked with the BSRN f_check program automatically after download (gunzip and f_check are located in the BSRN Toolbox program directory). If '''Check availability only''' was chosen, the BSRN Toolbox will create one file per selected station. Each file contains a listing of the ftp server directory.

----

Metadata

Select one or more uncompressed station-to-archive file(s) with '''File->Select File...''' or '''File->Select Folder...''' or by dragging the file(s) onto the program window. Then choose one or all logical records included in the station-to-archive file(s) with the menu '''Metadata'''. The BSRN Toolbox will extract the selected metadata. For each station-to-archive file and logical record a file will be created. Behind the metadata information the PANGAEA ID follows. This ID is used for the metadata inside the relational data model of PANGAEA. If this ID is equal to -999, no entry was found and the user has to edit the file named BSRN_IDs.txt on the PANGAEA web server. Only [mailto:Amelie.Driemel@awi.de Amelie Driemel] has permission to change this file. All other users - who do not import data into PANGAEA - can ignore the PANGAEA ID.

----

Data

Select one or more uncompressed station-to-archive file(s) and choose one or all logical records with the menu '''Data'''. For each station-to-archive file and logical record a file will be created. All time series files can be opened with PanPlot. The radiosonde profiles file can be visualized with Ocean Data View (ODV).

----

Import

For the creation of PANGAEA import files the menu '''Import''' has to be used. Like the menu '''Data''' the BSRN Toolbox will create one file for each station-to-archive file and logical record. These files can be imported to PANGAEA by a [[curator]] using 4D. If '''Overwrite dataset''' was checked, the import files contain the ID of the dataset to overwrite. This does only work if all BSRN datasets are known in the file named BSRN_Dataset_IDs.txt on the PANGAEA web server. Only [mailto:Amelie.Driemel@awi.de Amelie Driemel] has permission to change this file.
[[Image:formatted_converter_options.png|thumb|Fig. 4: Dialog for formatted format options]]

Tools

The BSRN Toolbox provides some useful tools for managing plain text files.

Concatenate files

If the user has selected more than one file, this tool concatenates all files. The new file is named '''ConcatenatedFiles.txt'''. Starting with the 2nd file a number of lines will be skipped at the beginning of each file. See fig. 2.

Convert Windows End-of-Line to UNIX

Station-to-archive files must be in UNIX format. This tool converts the Windows End-of-Line characters to the UNIX End-of-Line character.

Convert MacOS 9 End-of-Line to UNIX

Station-to-archive files must be in UNIX format. This tool converts the MacOS 9 End-of-Line character to the UNIX End-of-Line character.

Compress files with gzip

Station-to-archive files must be compressed with gzip. This tool compresses all selected files with the program gzip.

Convert tab files to unformatted format

Unformatted files are using a character for splitting fields. With a dialog the user can specify the field delimiter (comma, semicolon, space or tab stop) and the missing value for empty cells. The input file must be tab separated. See fig. 3.

Convert tab files to formatted format

Formatted files are using columns with fixed width for splitting fields. With a dialog the user can specify the field alignment (left or right), the width of fields and the missing value for empty cells. The input file must be tab separated. See fig. 4.

----

Quality Check

The BSRN Toolbox features means to perform quality checks of BSRN data. These features are available in the menu bar under '''Quality Check'''. For now, there is only one option '''BSRN Recommended V2.0''' available. An option with user configurable limits is planned.

The implemented qualitiy checks follow the [http://bsrn.awi.de/fileadmin/user_upload/bsrn.awi.de/Publications/BSRN_recommended_QC_tests_V2.pdf BSRN Global Network recommended QC tests, V2.0] from C. N. Long and E. G. Dutton.

[[Image:ToolBoxQC.png|thumb|Fig. 5: Quality Check option from the BSRN-Toolbox]]

Potential users of the quality check feature of the BSRN Toolbox are:
* the station scientists to test station-to-archive files before submission
* the data curators from the WRMC before archiving submitted data
* any user of the WRMC testing extracted data from the WRMC

Input data

Qualitiy checks can be performed with a variety of input data:
* PANGAEA file(s), e.g. as downloaded from [https://dataportals.pangaea.de/bsrn/?q=LR0100 https://dataportals.pangaea.de/bsrn/?q=LR0100]
* Many products from the [http://bsrn.awi.de/data/data-retrieval-via-pangaea/data-warehouse/ Data Warehouse]. Be aware that the check limits are intended to be used on high frequency data (temporal resolution of 1-3 minutes). Therefore no averaged data supplied by the Data Warehouse should be used.
* Station-to-archive-file(s) must be converted using the '''Data -> Basic and other measurements, LR 0100 + LR 0300''' option from the [http://wiki.pangaea.de/wiki/BSRN_Toolbox#Data Data]-menue first. The files created in this manner can then be used as input data for quality checking. The station-to-archive-file(s) may be
** downloaded from the ftp-achive using the [http://wiki.pangaea.de/wiki/BSRN_Toolbox#Downloading_station-to-archive_files Downloading station-to-archive files]-menue or
** produced locally e.g. by a station scientist.

[[Image:QC_Option1.png|thumb|Fig. 6: Quality Check Options]]

Quality codes

The quality codes that are written to the output files are unsigned integer values in decimal notation. Each ''quality code'' holds 6 ''quality flags'' (each represented by one bit of the quality code). The individual bits mean (from LSB to MSB):

{|
|-
! Bit position !! Decimal representation !! Meaning
|-
| 0 || 1 || Measurement falls below the physically possible limit
|-
| 1 || 2 || Measurement exceeds the physically possible limit
|-
| 2 || 4 || Measurement falls below the extremely rare limit
|-
| 3 || 8 || Measurement exceeds the extremely rare limit
|-
| 4 || 16 || Compared with a corresponding measurement the measurement is too low
|-
| 5 || 32 || Compared with a corresponding measurement the measurement is too high
|-
|}

This results in quality codes between 0 and 63. A quality code of 0 means that all checks were passed successfully.

Measurements which do not fall into the physically possible limits should be taken as highly suspect. Thus, this test should be performed in any case before submitting, archiving or using these data. Measurements beyond the extremely rare cases should at least be visually inspected. If no physical reasons - such as multireflections, extreme weather conditions, etc. - can be found it is recommended to exclude these data from submitting, archiving or using. When comparing measurements with each other it is unclear which of the two (or more) values caused the inconsistency. Further investigations are recommended.

[[Image:PanPlotFlags.png|thumb|Fig. 7: Visualization of flags using PanPlot]]
[[Image:PanPlotCombined.png.png|thumb|Fig. 8: Visualization of original data and flags using PanPlot]]

Example

* Download dataset http://doi.pangaea.de/10.1594/PANGAEA.759486 onto your local computer.
* Select the resulting file "GVN_radiation_2011-01.tab" into the BSRN Toolbox.
* Choose the Quality Check Options as shown in Fig. 6.
* As a result you will get the file GVN_radiation_2011-01_QC_codes.tab showing that all measurements carry flag 0 which means that all data fall within the physical possible limits. In any other case data users are strongly recommended to exclude these data from further analysis! This can be done by selecting the output option "Cleaned data", see Fig. 6. Station managers should prepare a corrected station-to-archive file and check it again before submission.
* Repeating the test by selecting "Extremely rare limits" will also result in file GVN_radiation_2011-01_QC_cleaned.tab now containing some flags (8=Measurement exceeds the extremely rare limit). The file can easily be visualized using [http://wiki.pangaea.de/wiki/PanPlot PanPlot], see Fig. 7.
* It is up to the user (station manager) how to proceed. At least a visual inspection is needed to decide whether the data should be excluded or kept.
* By selecting "One output file" and choosing "Original data" and "Quality codes", see Fig. 6, a file called GVN_radiation_2011-01_QC_combined.tab will be created. Again, PanPlot can be used to visualize e.g. SWD and the corresponding quality flags SWDQF, see Fig. 8. In this case SWD measurements exceed the extremely rare limit caused by multireflexion between broken clouds and the snow surface. Thus, these data should be kept for further analysis.
* Quality check option "Comparisons", see Fig. 6 should be used in the same way as the option "Extremely rare limits"
* All three check options can be selected at the same time. Single checks are recommended for fast overviews.
* Two algorithm for astronomical auxiliary data are offered. Iqbal 1983 do not regard refraction effects which can be significant especially close to the horizon, Solpos need additional input data such as station pressure and temperature at 2 m height which are not available in all BSRN datasets.
[[File:QC combined SDW SumSW.png|thumbnail|SumSW versus SWD created with PanPlot2]]

Short-wave downward versus Direct and Diffuse

The difference between the Short-wave downward (SWD) and the sum from Direct (DIR) and Diffuse (DIF) on a horizontal plane is a usable error indicator. The quality check option "Comparisons" offers the necessary output if "Auxiliary data", "Original data", and "One combined output file" are chosen.

Among many other parameters the outputfile *QC_combined.txt contains SWD as well as SumSW which can be displayed e.g. using PanPlot2. More convenient is to use the additional output file *QC_combined_SDW_SumSW.txt which contains just the 2 desired parameters SDW and SumSW which can be displayed with PanPlot2 without any further manipulations.

=Basic search=
[[Image:PANGAEA search 2018-07.PNG|thumb|200px|Search field on PANGAEA home]]

The most convenient and fastest way to find data is using the search engine on [http://www.pangaea.de/ PANGAEA home].
Each predefined dataset in its granularity as defined by the PI can be found by keywords and any expressions matching the data set description. Search is supported by an autocomplete functionality. Keywords can be
combined to create [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boolean_expression Boolean expressions] using a syntax identical to those used by search engines.

As a result of a query the titles of datasets are listed, linking to the full meta-description.

By prefixing keywords (using the format "prefix:keyword") with a tag name from the [[PANGAEA XML schema]] the search can be performed inside specific parts of the schema. Exceptions from that are schema parts like "attribute" and "reference" which are not searchable this way.

=Filtering of search results=

[[Image:PANGAEA search 2 2018-07.PNG|thumb|200px|Filtering of search results]]
The results of search can be filtered using facets in the left panel:
* [[Staff|Dataset Author]]
* Dataset Publication Year
* Topic
* [[Project]]
* [[Basis]]
* [[Method|Method/Device]]
* [[Campaign]] and
* Location

[[Image:PANGAEA geographical filter by 2018-07.PNG|thumb|200px|Filtering of search results]]
Additionally, the search results can be filtered by:
* Geographical coordinates and
* Date

=Advanced search=

'''Choosing search terms'''

When choosing search terms keep in mind:
* Try the obvious first. If you're looking for information on the grain size of sediment, enter "grain size" rather than "sediments"
* Use words likely to appear on a site with the information you want. "Holocene ice Lazarev" gets better results than "Holocene ice extension from the Lazarev Sea shelf".

'''Capitalization'''

PANGAEA searches are NOT case sensitive. All letters, regardless of how you type them, will be understood as lower case. For example, searches for "marine geology", "Marine Geology", and "mArInE gEoLoGy" will all return the same results.

'''Using query operators'''

PANGAEA Search uses per default the "AND" logic to combine the search terms. This means that all entered terms must be in the searched documents. To find documents that contain either one or another term (or both) concatenate by "OR". For example, enter "falconensis OR bulloides" to get all datasets that contain one of the terms.

The use of "AND" between keywords is optional. If you want to combine "AND" and "OR", use brackets - for example: "Globigerina AND (falconensis OR bulloides)".

'''Excluding searches by using "-"'''

To exclude certain keywords add a minus sign ("-") immediately before the search term you want to avoid (be sure to include a space before the minus sign).

'''Approximate searches'''

If you do not exactly know the spelling of a word, you may want to search not only for a particular keyword, but also for variants in spelling. Indicate a search for all by placing the tilde sign ("~") immediately in front of the keyword.

'''Wildcards'''

Wildcards allow a substitution of unknown characters in the item used for searching. The following table describes the wildcard characters and their attributes:

{| class="wikitable"
|-
! Wildcard !! Function !! Syntax !! Locates
|-
| ? || Specifies one alphanumeric character.|| m?ller || "müller", "miller", and "muller"
|-
| * || Specifies zero or more of any alphanumeric character. You should not use the asterisk to specify the first character of a wildcard-character string (slow search).|| corp*|| "corporate", "corporation", "corporal", and "corpulent"
|}

'''Phrase searches'''

Search for complete phrases by enclosing them in quotation marks. Words enclosed in double quotes ("like this") will appear together in all results exactly as you have entered them. Phrase searches are especially useful when searching for phrases or full names.

'''Searches in specific fields'''

[[PANGAEA XML schema]] can be used for specific queries using the PANGAEA search engine.
Search for keywords in specific fields by putting a the field name with a ':' immediately in front of the term you want to match. Exceptions from that are schema parts like "attribute" and "reference" which are not searchable this way, instead references can be searched using the reference relation type (e.g., "supplementto" or "relatedto"). Inside attributes can also be searched by using their name as field in front of the term. The most used field names are:

{| class="wikitable"
|-

The results page shows a list of abbreviated dataset descriptions (thumbs) including the links to the full dataset description and links to download the dataset in either html or text format. The score gives an estimate on the relevance of the search result: a higher score means that the entered words can be found more often and closer together.

Datasets are listed with ordinal numbers and are shown in ten hits per page. Above and below the listing, one may click the page number or the NEXT (or PREV) link to see more results.
The '''[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_warehouse data warehouse]''' is a tool to combine data from different PANGAEA datasets in one file. With a login the < Data warehouse > button is visible after submitting a query. The button links to a page which allows to configure geocodes and parameters for an export table. Parameters are listed in order by a score which depends on the query.

''' Example:'''
[[Image:Bulloides_1.png|thumb|200px|Data set of a planktonic foraminifera extracted with the data warehouse. Map plotted with ODV, interpolated with the ''diva'' algorithm.]]

The following example will produce a distribution map of a plankton shell in the world ocean sediments.

* go to http://www.pangaea.de
* login (or sign up for an account)
* search for ''bulloides'' (species name of a planktonic foraminifera)
* click on < Data warehouse > (a button on the upper right of the page)
* choose:
** Latitude
** Longitude
** Depth, sediment [m]
** Globigerina bulloides [%]
* < Start Data Warehouse Query >
* find a file ''bulloides.zip'' on your desktop and extract it. The file contains a list of all dataset citations in various formats (text only, RIS/Endnote, BIBTEX) and the datafile ''bulloides.tab''.
* start [[Pan2Applic]] (needs to be installed first)
* drag'n drop ''bulloides.tab'' to the empty window
* choose Convert/Ocean Data View (ODV needs to be installed first)
'''Important:''' '''''It is required to cite all datasets which are referenced in the data file and the citation list!'''''
The software '''Pan2Applic''' is a tool to convert files or folders of files (ascii/tab-separated data files with or without [[metaheader]]), downloaded from PANGAEA via the search engine or the data warehouse to formats as used by applications, e.g. for visualization or further processing. It may also be used to convert files or zip-archives as downloaded from CD-ROM data collections, published in the WDC-MARE Reports series.

Export formats supported by Pan2Applic are
# Google Earth
# Ocean Data View (ODV), oceanographic GIS
# ASCII/text for individual processing
# Shapefile, format as used by GIS applications

Further export formats may be added on request.

Pan2Applic output formats 1-3 are tab-delimited text-files with the extension *.txt. The DOI as a reference to the source of the data will be included in the output dataset. The user is requested to quote all references related to the original data when publishing new products resulting from a PANGAEA or CD download and processing with Pan2Applic. PANGAEA export files and Pan2Applic processed files can be opened by any editor or spreadsheet software.

'''Find the current version and reference of Pan2Applic at [http://doi.pangaea.de/10.1594/PANGAEA.288115?format=html doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.288115]'''
