PANGAEA Front-office/Back-office model
Overview
PANGAEA – Data Publisher for Earth & Environmental Science – is a leading, CoreTrustSeal-certified data repository, recognized for its commitment to the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) data principles. To efficiently manage the growing volume of data submissions and leverage the expertise of its extensive user community, PANGAEA has implemented a front-office/back-office model. This approach enables institutions to become active partners in data stewardship while benefiting from PANGAEA's technical infrastructure and editorial standards.
The Front-Office/Back-Office Model
Back-Office - our duties
The back-office is PANGAEA's core infrastructure, responsible for the technical backbone of data archiving, publishing, and maintaining editorial standards. The back-office provides:
- Proven technical infrastructure for long-term data archiving and publication
- Expertise in data curation and management
- Continuous support, training and mentorship for front-office staff
Front-Office - your advantages
A front-office is an institutional partner (such as a university or research institute) that collaborates with PANGAEA to provide on-site data services. Front-offices benefit from:
- Access to PANGAEA’s infrastructure and know-how
- The ability to offer tailored services to their researchers and data authors
- Integration of PANGAEA’s workflows in institutional data management procedures
- Significantly reduced turnaround times for data submissions
- Association with a CoreTrustSeal-certified, internationally recognized, and FAIR-compliant data repository
Becoming a PANGAEA Front-Office Partner
To establish a front-office partnership, an institution must enter into a legally binding collaboration agreement with PANGAEA. This agreement defines the rights and duties of both parties and includes the following essential components:
- Long-Term Commitment: The partner institution must secure and finance at least one institutional data editor with a long-term perspective. This individual undergoes extensive training (approximately one year) to become an independent on-site data steward.
- Cost Compensation: The agreement covers compensation for initial training, as well as contributions to annual maintenance and storage costs.
- Negotiated Terms: Details such as expected data volume and the approximate number of submissions per year are negotiated prior to signing.
- Quality Assurance: All front-office editors are trained and continuously mentored by PANGAEA’s Editorial Team to ensure compliance with editorial standards.
Active Partnerships
PANGAEA has successfully established front offices with several prominent research institutions, including:
- GEOMAR, Helmholtz centre for ocean research, Kiel
