Status

Following dataset status options are provided with different publication levels and consequences.

  • published - approved by the author/PI and publicly available data set; citation includes a DOI (registered automatically 4 weeks after final editing, until then "registration in progress")
  • in review (shown on dataset page as: in review) - data are potentially not validated/proofread by the author/PI and approved; DOI not yet registered

Unpublished data:

  • questionable (shown on dataset landing page as: unpublished dataset) - author/PI are uncertain about the quality of the data; documentation is incomplete; DOI not registered.
  • validated (shown on dataset landing page as: unpublished dataset) - approved by the author/PI; typically password protected; DOI not registered.

Protection / moratorium

For some datasets, the authors or projects request a password protection for a moratorium period of up to 2 years. This is typically the case if the dataset belongs to an on-going scientific project or if is related to a manuscript under review. If a dataset is password protected (access restricted), only those authors of the dataset with a PANGAEA login can access the data. Metadata are always public. PANGAEA users can contact the author with a request of sharing the data.

A temporary access link with an expiry date can be granted on request of the author. Such a link can be used to share the data with individuals or groups, for example co-authors or anonymous reviewers.

Dataset status and protection options overview

No Dataset options Status DOI
1 Published & no access restriction Dataset is final and fully citable, metadata and data open access DOI registered, no major changes possible (except, for example, adding a reference to a related paper)
2 Published & access restricted Dataset is final and fully citable, metadata available to the public, data not yet available to the public (moratorium) DOI registered, no major changes possible (except, for example, adding a reference to a related paper)
3 In review & no access restriction Citation preliminary, metadata and data available to the public (e.g. public review) DOI not registered, changes/updates in metadata and data possible
4 In review & access restricted Citation preliminary, metadata available to the public, data not available to the public (e.g. during article review) DOI not registered, changes/updates in metadata and data possible
