Hannes Grobe is a marine geologist and the chief-editor for data publications in PANGAEA. After his diploma in geology/paleontology at the Christian-Albrechts-University, Kiel in 1982, he joined the maiden voyage of the research vessel Polarstern to the Antarctic. The sampling material was used for a Ph.D. thesis about paleoclimate reconstructions (http://hdl.handle.net/10013/epic.11657). The thesis was followed by a three year period as a post-doc research scientist at the Alfred-Wegener-Institut (AWI). From 1989 to 1991 he was head of the public relation office of AWI. Since than he participated as a senior scientist in 15 expeditions to both polar hemispheres. Within the AWI geosciences infrastructure he is responsible for the POLARSTERN core repository and related laboratory facilities.

In 1986, Grobe realized the lack of a common database for geoscientific investigations. It was the start for the development and finaly the implementation of a repository for the various data from earth system research. The system PANGAEA is available to the international scientific community since the opening of the Internet. It was the first system allowing full referencing of data sets including a DOI (Digital Object Identifier). In 1995 Grobe founded the World Data Center for Marine Environmental Sciences (WDC-MARE) as part of the ICSU system and established the CD/journal WDC-MARE Reports. Since 2010 he is editor-in-chief of the Pangaea Data Publisher.
